Summer surfing tips

When summer hits and the waves get flat but all you want to do is get on the water and enjoy the ocean, take these tips to mind to stay safe and keep enjoying the summer vibes.

Sunscreen
This is the most important thing to remember when you are out in the sun in summer. There are a lot of great sunblock’s on the market but if you are always in the water look for ones that can stay on for over an hour. If you have fair skin get out of the water for 5 minutes to reapply this will save you big time. If you are lucky enough to live in warm water areas this will be a head to toe affair. But if like me you live where the water is freezing remember to still apply to face hands and feet. Remember you burn more in the water but also once you are out. I have a habit of finding shade as soon as I get out of the water but you still need to put sunscreen on even in the shade. The reflection off the water can burn more than direct sun exposure. Also get a great hat or a peak to help keep the sun off your money maker. The sun causers skin cancer so stay protected please.
Board types:
You might want to get a larger board for summer if you live in South Africa as the waves are a lot smaller in summer than winter and if you want to still surf during this time you need something bigger to catch those smaller waves. Longboards are great but you can also get some fun shorter boards with a lot more volume if you like me and still want to do turns that I can’t do on a longboard. Soft tops are a great choice if you are wanting to learn or just enjoy a larger board and they are safer for kids. Going from a shortboard to a longer one is tricky but a lot of fun can be had on a small day.
Slops or beach thongs:
Get yourself a pair of slops I prefer ones with a thick strap and more volume underfoot so you can use them in all areas. They will save you a lot of pain for hot sand to just walking on the rocks looking for treasures. There are some great brands out there but to be honest you need to find what works for you. This is because you will walk a lot in them over any given summer.
Fun:
The main reason we go to the beach because its so much fun. Remember to take a soccer ball or a cricket bat and ball or whatever to enjoy those times in between surfs. I have had the best times playing one bounce or a cricket game while out of the water. Get some large floatys to enjoy or if you like me take a fishing rod with to try your luck at catching some fish. The ocean and the beach have so much to offer so get out there and enjoy them.

Stay safe and have a great summer.
